SAGA - AmeriCorps in Alaska

How can YABAH help you?

Young Alaskans Building Affordable Housing (YABAH) is a very dynamic program aimed to support both community members, community development, and even the local economy. Most important to the program is its crewmembers, around which the program revolves. Crewmembers receive job training in order to help them gain the skills to go on and secure a more enjoyable, higher-paying job. When crewmembers aren't on the worksite learning valuable trade skills, they're in the classroom or out in the community, working hard to earn their General Equivalency Diplomas, vocational certifications, or life skills.

YABAH's educational and construction staff work together to provide comprehensive career counseling, lessons in life skills, and post-program support- all in order to give them a better chance to succeed in their future careers. Simultaneously, YABAH uses a construction-based environment as a launchpad for all of the member development, with YABAH crewmembers earning an AmeriCorps living stipend and education award for their hard work, while building an affordable house for the community.
To qualify to become a crewmember:
  • Support the program's goals
  • Have an interest in construction
  • Be committed to work for 6 months
  • Be motivated to learn and develop skills
  • Be an Alaska resident between the ages of 16 and 24
  • Meet income qualifications determined by YouthBuild).

Also, at least 75% of YABAH's crewmembers must not have their high school diploma or general equivalency diploma before the program begins.
